Years ago, the city was known for money, power, nightlife, crime, corruption, and opportunity. People came here chasing everything — wealth, freedom, respect, revenge, and second chances. For a while, the city gave people exactly what they wanted.
Then everything started falling apart.
The streets got louder. The sirens got slower. Businesses closed. Gangs took over neighborhoods. Police departments lost public trust. EMS units were stretched too thin. Courtrooms sat empty while criminals walked free. The rich got richer, the desperate got dangerous, and everyone else was left trying to survive.
Then came the night people still talk about.
A city-wide emergency broadcast went out after a wave of violence, fires, blackouts, and panic hit the streets all at once. Dispatch was overwhelmed. Officers were down. EMS was calling for backup. Civilians were trapped. Businesses were burning.
Then every system in the city failed at once. Power, dispatch, cameras, communications — a total city-wide outage that lasted 4 hours and 20 minutes. Exactly. The power was restored at 4:20 AM that morning, to the second. No surge, no flicker, no explanation. The grid simply came back on, as if someone had decided the city had been in the dark long enough.
No one knew who — or what — was in control anymore.

Someone — or something — entered the city's servers and network. Massive amounts of data were mined, yet nothing was ever uploaded. Nothing was downloaded. Whatever they were after, they obtained all of it in less than 2.3 seconds. The data was simply read, in real time, and then the connection was gone.
The city's systems never had time to respond. The first automated defense didn't trigger until 6.8 seconds after the breach — long after the intruder had already vanished. By the time anyone was looking, there was nothing left to look at.
Very little is known about the breach, aside from one detail no one can explain away: it occurred at the exact same moment the entire police database was wiped. Warrants, case files, arrest records, evidence logs — gone. Whether the wipe was a cover, a distraction, or the entire point remains the subject of heated speculation across every corner of the city.

A hacktivist group actively fighting cyber crime across the city. Fully anonymous, they are considered vigilantes of the state — looked at by most as heroes. Many, including local police, hold a strong disliking for their less-than-legal methods of obtaining information.
That friction runs all the way to the courthouse. Evidence surfaced by <NODE> tends to cause serious issues in the DOJ when prosecuting — cases built on information no warrant ever authorized have a way of falling apart, no matter how true it is.
What was taken?
Nothing left the network — which means everything of value may already be in someone else’s head. Financial records, informant lists, sealed cases. Nobody knows which, and nobody can prove any of it.
Who — or what?
